Science Murder Mystery - Materials and their Properties - States of Matter
Science Murder Mysteries are great fun for both you and the students. For this mystery students will use their knowledge of materials and their properties as well as their states of matter knowledge to investigate who poisoned Andrew Smith. They’ll look at the 5 suspects poisons both using their eyes and under a microscope and compare the poisons to the one found at the crime scene.
They’ll have to figure out how to separate the substances in the water (salt, sugar, etc.) to take a closer look and make their comparisons to figure out which suspect to put in jail!

Microorganisms Student Booklet
This microorganisms student booklet is a great project for students to carry out research on algae, protozoa, bacteria, fungi, helminths, and viruses, creating a page for each with space for a diagram or picture along with a front and back cover page. It’s perfect as a personal project or extension activity project if you’re looking at microorganisms.
This pack comes in both color and black and white.

In this activity your class will go on a hunt to find and classify living things by simple criteria, for example, an animal with wings. They will record their observations by drawing the living thing on their record sheet. This activity gets your students looking at which materials are magnetic. They will go around outside equipped with a magnet to investigate which objects it sticks to.

Forces and Motion: The Lever Challenge - Outdoor STEM
For this activity students will be set the challenge to lift their partner off the ground without touching them using a set of materials provided. The idea is that they’ll create some kind of lever so they can stand on one side of the plank of wood and lift their partner on the other.
Our suggested teaching structure:
Planning sheet: 15 mins Building their lifting device: 20 mins Evaluation sheet: 15 mins This activity works best if students are left to produce their own designs and figure things out for themselves, however if by the end of the session, not all the students have figured out how to lift their classmate by using a lever, get some students to demonstrate and begin to explain how it works.

Floating and Sinking Outdoor Challenge
For this activity students are challenged to make the same object both sink and float, encouraging them to think about why objects either sink or float, and then how it is possible that the same object can be made to both sink and float.
This resource has two differentiated results sheets and questions:
Diff. 1 – A simple question about the properties of items that sunk.
**Diff. 2 – **A question to encourage critical thinking about how it is possible the same object can be made to both sink and float.
A great follow up activity is to get your class to design and build a paper boat, seeing which boat is able to carry the most cargo without sinking.

For this activity students will look at what makes something living or not. They will complete the table by going outside and drawing living things in the left column and non-living things in the right column.

Materials and Their Properties: Outdoor STEM Activity - Permeability
Your students are set with the challenge to save Eddie who is ship wrecked on a desert island. They will need to research and create a water catching device using only natural materials and some tape.
Your class will research the permeability of different natural materials to find out which material will be best to make their water catchers out of. They will then design and create their water catchers before putting it to the test and seeing which catcher can collect the most water and save Eddie!
After researching, designing, building, and testing, they will then evaluate their designs and teamwork, looking at what went well and what they could have done to improve it. This activity is best done in mixed ability groups of 2 or 3.

Food Chains Sorting Activity
This is a fun cut and stick / outdoor ordering activity for food chains as part of your living things topic.
For this activity students will use chalk or our provided cards to complete the food chains. It’s a great way to introduce food chains while letting student get out of their seats taking part in the practical activity.
Before the students compete this activity they’ll need an input as to what food chains are and how they work.
Using Chalk: This method is our preferred way to do this activity. Put the students into pairs and give each pair the muddled food chain sheet. They must use the animals on the sheet to create their food chains by drawing pictures and arrows using chalk. This pack contains differentiated food chain sheets where the chains get more complex each time.
Picture Cards: This pack also contains sets of picture and arrow cards to make up the food chains. Each set is color coded. Put the students into pairs and give each group a set of picture and arrow cards for them to use to complete the food chain.

Decomposition Timeline Ordering Activity Freebie
This activity looks at the decomposition rate of both natural and man made objects. Students will give their predictions before placing the objects onto a large outdoor timeline.
Teaching Structure:
Draw a 0 - 1000 year timeline on the playground using chalk. Check students understand what decomposition is.
Get students to collect a variety of natural and man made items from your outdoor space (this is also a great way to give your outdoor space a little tidy!). If there is not much rubbish, it’s useful to add the items from the list.
Get students to share what they’ve collected and predict how long it will take each item to decompose. If wanted, they can complete their tables while doing this. Once they’ve made their predictions share the correct decomposition rates, get them to complete their table and place their objects in the correct place on the timeline.
If you’d rather, you can use our item cards instead of the students collecting their own items.
